Huahine 2001-2004
In 2001 The Kon-Tiki Museum with Dr. Paul Wallin as the lead scientist, initiated a program of archaeological excavation of ritual structures on the island of Huahine, in the Leeward Group of the Society Islands, French Polynesia.
The project was conducted in collaboration with Dr. Y.H. Sinoto of the B.P. Bishop Museum in Hawai’i and Eric Komori.
Through four excavation seasons ten temple structures were investigated and a first understanding of the emergence of the marae temple complex in the Leeward Islands was achieved. The photographs from these excavations
are part of the archives at the Thor Heyerdahl’s Research Institute.
