After the two voyages with the reed ships Ra and Ra II, where the crew found a large belt of oil lumps floating in the Atlantic Ocean, Thor Heyerdahl
spent an increasingly large amount of his time fighting for the protection of the world’s oceans. Consequently, in the period between 1970 and 1983, with
the exception of building and sailing the huge Tigris in 1978, Heyerdahl devoted most of his time to writing and making people aware of environmental issues.
After 1983 he again began to undertake a number of expeditions devoted to researching various aspects of the world’s culture history.
