Maldive Expedition 1984

In 1983 Thor Heyerdahl organized his first archaeological project since the Norwegian Archaeological Expedition to Easter Island and the East Pacific in 1955-56. He went to the beautiful low-coral islands of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean in order to see if he could find evidence for ancient voyagers coming to these islands. Two seasons of excavations in 1983 and in 1984 unearthed a series of Buddhist temples.

The expedition to the Maldives in 1983 also marked the beginning of a collaboration between Thor Heyerdahl and the Swedish film production company Sebra Films. They participated in most of his alter expeditions and documented them both through film and photos. The results is that Sebra Film in Sweeden has the full photographic documentation of the expeditions to the Maldives.

The Kon-Tiki Museum has a small collection of mostly black-and-white prints from this expedition. These are the documentation photographs of the archaeological excavations.
