Opening Hours and Facilities
The Thor Heyerdahl’s Research Institute has a research Library, Archives and Collections.
The main library and document archives have been in place in the same room of the building since 1983, together with offices for the museum curator(s). Secondary documents archives have for many years been located in cramped storage
space together with photographs and film material. The temperature and humidity of this storage space has not been optimal.
When Bengt Danielsson’s document archives and library arrived in 1999 from Tahiti, it had signs of mould infestation. All documents and books were treated chemically and cleaned prior to being included in the Kon-Tiki Museum library and
archives. Smaller quantities of donated books have been freeze-treated in the conservation laboratories at the Norwegian Folk Museum.
We welcome all researchers, students, and journalists/writers that have an interest in Thor Heyerdahl or the Pacific. The institute has three work desks for visitors, two which might be long-term workspaces.
The library, archives and collections are generally accessible from Monday to Friday 10:00 – 15:00.
However, the archive manager might be away on fieldwork, seminars, or vacation and if You want to be sure to use the facility of the institute, please tell us Your schedule in advance by e-mail to Reidar.Solsvik@kon-tiki.no.
