Personal Research Collection

Thor Heyerdahl conducted research on cultural contact and diffusion from his return to Fatu Hiva until his death in 2002. As part of this research he collected photographs of ethnological or archaeological objects or cultural traits, either from other museum collections and publications or directly from the field.

The Kon-Tiki Museum has Thor Heyerdahl’s research archive from his extensive research in the Pacific and his later work with cultural parallels between ancient cultures in the Mediterranean area between cultures in South America. This material was collected between the early 1950s until the mid-1980s. It consists mainly of black-and-white prints.
