Ra 1969-70

In 1969 Thor Heyerdahl undertook his second major maritime experimental archaeological project by reconstructing an ancient Egyptian type of reed ship in order to sail it across the Atlantic. The first attempt failed when the ship fell apart after a five thousand kilometre long drift journey. The following year a new ship was built and after sixty-nine days it landed safely in Barbados.

The Kon-Tiki Museum has all the original photographs related to the two Ra Expeditions. The collection consists of c. 5.000 photographs, mainly slides from the voyages. There are also many photographs from the travels Thor Heyerdahl undertook preparing for the expedition, documenting reed boat building traditions in several parts of the world.
