The Kon-Tiki Museum Library

The Thor Heyerdahl’s Research Institute has a small but excellent research library with c. 12.000 titles in addition to a journal collection.

The backbone of the library is The Kroepelien Collection or Biblioteca Polynesiana as it is called by bibliophiles. The collection is owned by the Oslo University Library, but deposited at the Thor Heyerdahl’s Research Institute since 1983.
It consists of c. 4.000 titles of rare books and many early explorers journals, mainly focused on French Polynesia.

In 1983 Thor Heyerdahl donated his private research library of c. 2.000 titles to The Kon-Tiki Museum. These titles became the basis of the Kon-Tiki Museum book collection continuously enlarged by books acquired by the museum.
Today the collection counts c. 6.000 titles. Polynesian and South American archaeology are the most numerous topics.
